Mayane Rodrigues was at the window of her apartment in Brazil on a grey, streaming afternoon when she noticed a schoolgirl stop on the pavement below. The sequence was odd enough to hold her attention: the girl set down her umbrella, took off her backpack, and then removed her jacket in the rain.
Then Rodrigues saw the soaked puppy at the girl's feet, and the rest of it made sense.
The girl wrapped the puppy in the jacket, picked her up, and carried her home — leaving her own umbrella secondary to the job at hand. Rodrigues filmed the last part of it. She sent the clip to a friend, who posted it to a neighbourhood group, which is how she eventually learned the name of the girl she had been describing to everyone as an angel: Cibely Stiegelmair, thirteen years old.
Cibely's mother, Rejane, has told reporters that her first reaction on her daughter's arrival was alarm rather than pride. Cibely came in soaked through and sweating, and there was blood on her shirt. Rejane assumed her daughter had been hurt on the way home. Cibely explained that the blood was the puppy's — she had found her injured on the pavement and had not been willing to leave her there.
The injuries turned out to be minor, which is the outcome that makes this story a nice one rather than a sad one. The puppy, whom Cibely named Pretinha, needed cleaning up, warmth and time rather than surgery. She has stayed with the family.
Two things in this are worth flagging for anyone who finds themselves in the same position. Cibely got the most important part right by accident: a wet, cold, injured puppy needs to be dried and warmed before anything else, and wrapping her in a dry insulating layer against a warm body is genuinely the correct first move. Small puppies cannot regulate their own temperature well, and hypothermia is what kills them on a rainy pavement, not the wound. The second is that a bleeding animal picked up off the street should still see a veterinarian even when the injury looks trivial — wounds of unknown origin carry infection risk, and a puppy of unknown history needs a parasite check and vaccines regardless.
Nobody has established how Pretinha came to be alone and hurt on that stretch of pavement, and it is unlikely that anybody will. Rejane has said the family were already proud of their daughter and are now more so, which is the sort of statement that would be unremarkable except that it was prompted by a thirteen-year-old choosing to be cold and wet for twenty minutes on behalf of an animal she had never seen before.
